Hyderabad, Jul 22: Journalists today staged a demonstration in front of DGP office here to protest against the police officials who prevented them from covering the arrival of the body of Yadi Reddy who committed suicide in Delhi in support of the demand for Telangana state.Later, a delegation of Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) met Director General of Police (Law and Order) M Ratan and submitted a memorandum.
The memorandum said the police action was a direct attack on the freedom of the media guaranteed under the Constitution.”The arrest of journalists was uncivilised and unacceptable. We strongly believe that the police have no authority to prevent the media from accessing the place of news and covering it.The police have grossly exceeded their authority and it is unacceptable in a civilised society. We demand that stringent action be taken against the police officers responsible for this action,” the memorandum added.The DGP said he would inquire into the matter and take steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
