In order to expedite the restoration and beautification of lakes in Hyderabad, Rangareddy and Medak districts, officials have been asked to form a WhatsApp group for better coordination.
At a review meeting held at the Secretariat here on Saturday, irrigation minister T Harish Rao directed the officials to create the group. The WhatsApp created for the irrigation department works has resulted in better coordination and speedy execution of works. The irrigation department identified 169 lakes or water bodies in Greater Hyderabad for restoration or beautification. Of those, 26 lakes are in Hyderabad, 133 in Rangareddy and 10 in Medak district, spread over an area of 625 sq km.
Officials informed the minister that a survey had been carried out on 155 lakes so far and survey on the remaining 14 lakes would be taken up with the help of defence and revenue officials within a month.
The state government has sanctioned `100 crore for restoration of 64 lakes. Tenders have been called for work on 37 lakes and actual work began on 14 lakes.
“There should be no delay in the execution of the works,” Rao told the officials. Officials informed him that agreements would be finalised on 12 more lakes soon.
Harish Rao asked the officials to take stern action against those who encroach upon lakes in the city. “Political affiliation should not come in the way of taking action,” he said.
Noticing some delay in the lake restoration works, he directed his ire at the officials. “The government will act tough on officials if there is a delay in executing the works,” he warned and told the officials to consult the advocate-general to clear legal hurdles.
