Telangana Brand Ambassador Sania Mirza wins US Open Mixed Doubles

Top seed pair of Sania Mirza and Bruno Soares, playing their first tournament together, defeated American Abigail Spears and Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez 6-1, 2-6 and 11-9 (tie-breaker) to win the US Open mixed doubles Grand Slam in New York on Saturday.

Sania and Bruno won the US Open mixed doubles title by winning the tie-breaker 10-8 in their favour.

Sania and Bruno won the first set quite convincingly 6-1 but lost the momentum in the second after Abigail-Santiago duo bounced back to seal the second set 6-2 in their favour and make it 1-1.

The Indo-Brazilian pairing, top-seeds in the US Open mixed doubles event, beat Taipei’s Yung-Jan Chan and Briton Ross Hutchins 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 in 1 hour and 33 minutes to make it to the finals on Wednesday.

This was Sania’s sixth Grand Slam final and her fifth mixed doubles final, her first in New York. She has made one women’s doubles final, at the French Open in 2011, playing alongside Russian Elena Vesnina.

The Hyderabadi has made four Grand Slam mixed-doubles finals prior to this US Open, winning two titles, one at the Australian Open (2009) with Mahesh Bhupathi and the other at the French Open in 2012 (also with Bhupathi).
