REC Ready to Invest Rs 25 k Cr for TS Power

The Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) has come forward to fund around ` 25,000 crore for construction of Telangana State Genco power stations. REC chairman and managing director Rajeev Sharma called on Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao at Secretariat on Tuesday. Telangana State Genco chairman and managing director D Prabhakar Rao took part in the discussions.

“The REC has come forward to fund ` 25,000 for various projects proposed by Telangana State,” Prabhakar Rao told Express later.

Sources in CMO said that Rajeev Sharma assured to fund the projects of Telangana Genco, Transco and distribution companies. Chief Minister Rao thanked the REC chairman for extending the help.

The Chief Minister also discussed the power scenario with Rajeev Sharma and Prabhakar. He told the Genco CMD that the present installed capacity of less than 5,000 MW needed to be increased through long-term, short-term and medium-term strategies.

The Genco CMD told the Chief Minister that the State would get 2,800 MW of additional power by the end of next year from three sources – Bhupalpally 600 MW of Genco, from Jaipur in Adilabad 1,200 MW of Singareni and 1,000 MW of central generating stations. Once 2,800 MW power is available, the deficit would be overcome, he said.

Chief Minister Rao reminded the officials that power demand in Telangana State would be much more in future due to the construction of major irrigation projects, ITIR project in Hyderabad, the proposed Water Grid and setting up of huge industries. He directed the officials to plan accordingly and increase the installed capacity of power generation.

He directed the officials to prepare massive plans to take the total installed capacity of Telangana to 20,000 MW in future. For the immediate needs, short and medium term plans should be devolved, the Chief Minister told the officials. “Our aim is to see that there will be no power cuts in the coming 10 to 15 years time,” he said.
