Andhra Gentlemen – an oxymoron?

By: Soonya

I have been keenly watching the antics of our Seemandhra politico-businessmen in the recently times. I am reminded of what a Tamilian Professor at Osmania University told me long ago that ‘Andhra gentlemen is an oxymoron’ or a contradiction in terms. Given the Andhra Pradesh identity that I was holding at that time, I felt that the Prof was biased and disagreed with him. but he had many instances about Andhra people’s behaviour in Madras!

After being a witness to the antics our Seemandhra ‘gentlemen’, I wonder after all the Prof was right.

Telangana issue or the struggle is not a race or a business competition where one has to try till the last moment and last ounce of energy that one has. The way these folks and those who are occupying constitutional positions are behaving, I wonder if they understands grace at all. I also wonder if they can ever be statesmen.

Everyday they surprise you with their ‘innovative’ and cheaper-by-the-day antics!

They are not only a blot to democracy, but also they are a shame for the constituencies they represent. Unfortunately the educated classes from Seemandhra barring a few, seem to relish the cheap antics of all these people.

Take the curious case of CBN – one wonders what his strategy is! While they seem to be ok with de-merger, they seem to cling two opposing views! The gent who is shouting from rooftops about ‘rational’ de-merger, does not spell out what the animal is!

Jagan is another cup of tea altogether! While he shamelessly abandoned all those who aspired to get into politics in Telangana are shown the short end of the stick!

The less said the better of a constitutional authority and it’s role bearer Monsieur Reddy! He seems to have forgotten the oath of office that he swore by!

These Lilliputian leaders are not even as funny as the dwarfs in a circus who at least entertain, if it weren’t for a tragedy imposed heartlessly by these blokes!

Today they are ‘plotting’ to delay the draft bill send in by the head of the state, throwing to wind the protocols and respect the position deserves! All for what? Petty politics? Sad to see wise men like Gajapatiraju also following the footsteps of a Py-avula!

We were trained to understand the characteristics of a ruling elite or a ruling class so that one can devise appropriate strategies to deal with. But, I must admit defeat, to my Prof and accept that what we see are only Oxymorons!

Seemandhra gentlemen politicians!

I hoped against all hopes that they will grace themselves and grace us, nah, nada, not to be!

And the Oxford dictionary must find a new meaning to the word ‘oxymoron’ – bull-headed and Moronism.

However behind the not-so-funny antics, is a criminal cynicism that we must guard against. These are easy distractions, while they are capable of spinning wheels within wheels. Silently they got 10 years common capital, got the Guv to get law and order and got the infamous Polavaram a national status.

Telangana congress ministers and MLAs and MPs should not confine to back-patting themselves but to be vigilant and ensure that we are not ensnared into another trap with shackles on the new born state.

In this din, one must keep one’s head on the shoulders and critically evaluate the Draft bill and ensure that it is not further diluted and at the same time fight against the un-democratic provisions included in the draft bill.

Like a smart film critic who ignores the song and dance numbers and focuses on the main story, we must ignore the free entertainment these oxymorons are offering us and not get distracted.

I personally think these antics are a smokescreen and must be viewed as such. One must keenly watch the hidden strategies and intentions behind the drama by the oxymorons!

And another oxymoron is ‘Samaikyavadam’! With so much of vitriol and hatred spewed against everything Telangana, how do these Samaikyavaadis plan to get Telangana people to accept to live together?

The new slogan that we must draw is, beware of the oxymorons – for it is like a well-fed bull drunk on power and which has no reins!

And I guess we must remember the obstacles that these oxymorons are creating at every step of the de-merger and pay in the same coin when they come to the negotiating table for sharing of waters! No regular, characteristic Telangana grace for these oxymorons! They do not deserve it.

Only a Chanakya-like attitude with these guys works.

They are only hardening not just our resolve but our attitude towards the Seemandhra people as well. Hope our Telugu brothers across the border see the writing on the wall.
