The Telangana issue once again echoed in the national capital, with the two-day Sansad Yatra of Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) commencing at Jantar Mantar in Delhi with a ‘Satyagraha Deeksha’ on Monday.
The Deeksha was attended by 2,000 plus activists, with leaders of some national parties extending solidarity. It was inaugurated by Sumit Chakravartty, editor of Mainstreem weekly. BJP national leader Prakash Javedkar, visited the protest camp to extend his party’s support, along with BJP state leaders G Kishan Reddy, Bandaru Dattatreya and others. His party will support the Telangana bill, if introduced in the current session of Parliament, he said.
He said statehood is the aspiration of four crore people of Telangana and by not respecting that sentiment, the Congress is making a grave mistake. It is now their last chance to set things right, he said and reiterated that if the BJP-led NDA is back in power, it will form state within 100 days.
Speaking on the occasion, TRS floor leader in Assembly Etala Rajender said they are in the nation’s capital to voice the aspirations of all Telangana people. If Congress fails to concede the statehood demand, it better count its days, he said.
TRS leader K Taraka Rama Rao, Nagarkurnool MLA Nagam Janardhan Reddy and others were present.
Speaking to Express, TJAC chairman M Kodandaram expressed happiness over the success of the first day of the programme. “Several leaders of national parties have extended their support. BJP floor leader in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj will be visiting the protest camp on Tuesday. Though party senior leaders Rajnath Singh and LK Advani were supposed to come, with Parliament in session and Karnataka election campaign to look after, they could not make it,” he said.
“Most importantly, the National Congress Party had not only extended support, but also announced that it will join TJAC and work for the cause of Telangana state. Its general secretary Devi Prasad Tripathi had made an announcement to that effect,” he added.
The main objective of the Sansad Yatra was to bring more pressure on the Congress-led UPA government to concede the demand for Telangana state, he said.
