Dozens of pro-Telangana students were arrested by police here Thursday as they tried to disrupt the meeting of Seemandhra leaders at Ministers’ Quarters in Banjara Hills.
Tension prevailed since morning. Anticipating trouble, the police cordoned off the area, erected barricades and barbed-wire fence at vantage points. The media personnel were also barred from entering the premises to cover the meeting.
According to police officials, they had deployed heavy forces including civil police and armed police to prevent any untoward incident. In a flash demonstration, students belonging to Osmania University JAC (OUJAC) and activists of the Telangana Jagruthi made an attempt in vain to barge into the high-security Ministers’ Quarters to disrupt the meeting. They rushed towards the Ministers’ Quarters gate raising slogans of ‘Jai Telangana’, and said that they would not allow any meeting which was aimed at stalling the formation of Telangana state. Activists including women, tried to resist the police attempts to arrest them.
As tension mounted, police arrested the protestors and bundled them into waiting vehicles. Later even Telangana Advocates JAC also joined the protest. The students made repeated attempts to intrude into the meeting premises but were arrested. [The Hans India]
