`Photonics valley’ to boost IT industry in Telangana

Telangana is set to have the world’s first `photonics valley’ that is expected to give a fillip to the information technology industry in the state. The government, on Saturday , signed a memorandum of understanding for setting up of a photonics valley with PhotonIC Corporation that is based in the United States of America.

Photonics is one of the fastest growing high technology industries in the world. This field relies on using light to increase processing speed and exchange of information in computing and other areas that currently depend on physical material for data transfer. Dependence on photonics in various industries is expected to grow as industry reaches the limits of data transfer with existing technologies.

The MoU was signed by IT secretary Haripreet Singh and chief executive officer of PhotonIC Corporation, Dr. Birendra Raj Dutt in the presence of CM K Chandrasekhar Rao and IT minister KT Rama Rao on Saturday .

According to a release from the chief minister’s office, PhotonIC is involved with various projects for American military .The company designs and develops standard and new processing technology for commercial use of photonic integrated circuits and related devices.

The two sides will collaborate in evolving, testing and production of next generation chips and products by using the new technology . The MoU will be followed by a more detailed agreement within 90 days after the company submits a feasibility report to the government, the release added.
