Govt. to strictly monitor road works

Panchayat Raj Minister K.T. Rama Rao has said that the government will give priority to laying roads in rural areas and strictly monitor the works.

The Minister, who reviewed road works in the State with Panchayat Raj engineer-in-chief Satyanarayana here on Wednesday, said that while there would be no delay in the release of bills to the contractors, the government would not relax timelines and impose penalty if the works were not completed within the stipulated time.

In case of lacunae in the quality of work, departmental action will be initiated against officers, he said and instructed officials not to forward files seeking extension of time for road works as the government was determined to provide road connectivity to every village at the earliest.

The approval for road works and allocation of funds is being done in a systematic manner by giving equal importance to all constituencies.

Mr. Rama Rao also cautioned the contractors not to indulge in undesirable competition and offload work to sub-contractors. The contractors should adhere to PMGSY standards and also the Defect Liability Period for five years.

Mr. Satyanarayana submitted a report to the Minister comprising proposals made by about 70 Class I and Special Class contractors in a meeting convened on Tuesday.
