The state government has decided to promote Green House cultivation in a big way within 100 km radius around Hyderabad for which Rs 250 crore has been earmarked.
Agriculture minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy informed the state Assembly that there is scanty cultivation of vegetables on the city outskirts. About 80 percent of the vegetables to the city comes from Karnataka, Maharashtra and other states. If these vegetables are grown within the radius of 100 km, people would get vegetables at affordable prices and farmers would also get better prices, the minister said.
The Central government has allocated Rs 9.30 crore and the state government has allocated Rs 250 crore (75 percent subsidy to the farmers) for the year 2014-15 and 2015-16. There was a proposal to set up training centres for skill development of farmers.
As many as 147 mandals fall under 100 km radius around Hyderabad that include Rangareedy (42), Nalgonda (16), Mahbubnagar (18), Medak (46) and Nizamabad (8).
