Droupadi Murmu is the new President of India.

For the first time in the country, a woman belonging to the Santhal tribals of Odisha state was elected President of the country.

NDA’s candidate Ms Droupadi Murmu became the 15th President of India. Ms. Murmu received 2,824 votes of 6,76,803 value while Mr. Sinha received 1,877 votes or 3,80,177 value.

Ms Droupadi Murmu who hails from a remote tribal village Rai Rangapur in Odisha state began her career as a clerk and later worked as a teacher. She joined politics in 1997 and worked as a cabinet minister in Odisha and Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021.

Prime Minister Mr Modi went to her residence and congratulated her. Many leaders across parties hailed her victory.

Mr Yashwanth Sinha responded by stating that as Lord Krishna says he did his duties without expecting the fruit.

There were celebrations all over Odisha state, particularly in Ms Droupadi Murmu’s village where people came out singing and dancing showcasing their native tribal culture.
