Taking the first step towards hassle-free traffic movement in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, the foundation stones for multi-level flyovers and grade separators were laid at three places in the city on Sunday under Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP).
Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mahamood Ali laid the foundation stone for the multilevel flyovers at KBR Park in Banjara Hills, at Mindspace and Rajiv Park in Hitec City.
Japanese Garden, developed on a one-acre land at a cost of Rs 80 lakh on Road No 3 at Banjara Hills was also inaugurated. Union minister of labour and employment Bandaru Dattatreya, IT minister KT Rama Rao, commerical taxes minister T Srinivas Yadav and others were present.
Speaking to mediapersons later, Rama Rao said the multilevel flyovers, skywalks and grade separators at 54 important traffic junctions like those in cities across the world would be built in the city in about three years at a cost of over Rs 20,000 crore.
Water Reservoirs:
To meet the drinking water needs of the city, Rama Rao said, the state government decided to construct two dedicated drinking water reservoirs with a capacity of 40 tmcft of water at cost Rs 7,500 crore.
ILFS has come forward to provide financial loan for taking up construction of the two reservoirs. One reservoir will be constructed near Outer Ring Road at Rachakonda and the other at Shamirpet.
Rama Rao said SRDP was prepared to meet the growing traffic requirements of the city whose population has grown to over 1 crore.
Under the plan, multi-level flyovers, skywalks and signal-less junctions will be developed at 54 places in the city. In the first phase, 50 flyovers will be built at 18 junctions at a cost of Rs 1,096 crore.
At three places where the foundation stones was laid on Sunday, 26 flyovers will be developed at 10 junctions.
Multilevel grade separators will come up at six junctions (KBR Park Entrance Junction, Cancer Hospital Junction, Maharaja Agrasen Junction, Film Nagar Junction, Road No. 45 Junction and Jubilee Hills Check-post Junction) and existing at-grade peripheral and radial roads around KBR Park will be widened and strengthened at a cost of Rs 510 crore.
The corridor surrounding KBR Park acts as a spinal ring to connect easter part of the city with Hitec City. The corridor has six critical junctions and 31 critical crossing conflicts.
By building multilevel flyovers there, these conflicts can be avoided and continuous traffic movement facilitated.
Foundation stone was also laid for construction of multilevel flyovers at four junctions _ Biodiversity Junction, Mindspace Junction, Ayyappa Society and Rajiv Gandhi Statue _ including widening and strengthening of existing at-grade road at Mindspace Junction to cost Rs 266 crore.
It would help save travel time for about 80,000 vehicle hours per day, increase speed from 20 kmph to 35 kmph, save fuel consumption, decrease pollution levels and vehicle operating costs.
