Ambedkar Statue to be Unveiled in 2017

Preparations have started to erect a 125-foot-high statue of Dr B R Ambedkar, the chief architect of Indian Constitution, near Party Zone located in the sprawling NTR Gardens on NTR Marg Road in the city.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao will lay the foundation stone for the statue on April 14. Officials from Social Welfare department and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) started the works for the foundation stone laying ceremony on Monday. The Chief Minister, in a review meeting held few days ago, had directed officials to complete the statue within a year so that it can be unveiled on April 14, 2017. The project is expected to cost around `25 crore.

HMDA officials told Express that they received a communication from the State government to hand over the land located in between the party zone and parking lot on NTR Marg Road to Social Welfare department for installing the statue.

Suddala Sudhakar Teja, the Vastu advisor to Telangana government, monitored the preparatory works in the presence of authorities concerned on Monday. The officials carried out soil testing on the site and took samples of the soil.

The State government has decided to erect a 125-foot-high statue of Ambedkar to commemorate his 125 birth anniversary on April 14. The Chief Minister constituted a committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister, Kadiam Srihari to identify a suitable location for the statue.

Apart from the Party Zone, the state government also considered two other spots – one on Necklace road and the other, a couple of acres of open land next to Prasad’s multiplex. But the panel opted for NTR Gardens.
