The central government has given in-principle approval for establishing All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Telangana. In a letter sent to the Telangana government, the Centre directed the officials to identify land for AIIMS.
The land for the proposed AIIMS will be identified soon. Issues relating to land acquisition with regard to time and cost overrun are major problems in most of the proposals. Hence land free from encumbrances may be secured first for the proposal, the Finance Ministry stated in the letter.
A Detailed Project Report (DPR) based on the land allocated will be prepared by a reputed agency and submitted along with the proposal.
The Centre will be releasing funds from the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) which has a budget allocation of Rs. 3,825 crore for 2018-19.
Earlier, TRS MPs have stalled the Lok Sabha in 2017-18 budget session demanding the establishment of AIIMS in Telangana. TRS MPs have also made multiple visits to Union Health and Finance ministries offices in Delhi, pursuing the issue of establishing AIIMS in Telangana state. Though AIIMS was sanctioned to Telangana in the year 2017, no major allocations have been made for the proposed institute.
