Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments seek Telangana rice to meet shortfall 

The demand for Telangana rice is picking pace in the domestic market. After Karnataka, now the Tamil Nadu government has requested Telangana to supply 3 lakh tonnes of rice to meet the shortfall of rice for their food security scheme. Earlier, the Karnataka government also requested Telangana for 2.5 lakh tonnes of rice.

The demand for Telangana rice is growing as the state topped rice production in the country with an advance estimate of 160.14 lakh metric tonnes. Keeping the growing demand in view, CM KCR has instructed the Civil Supplies Department officials to begin milling on a large scale. The CM also advised the officials to market Telangana farmers’ produce internationally to reap more profits.  

After the state formation, with the introduction of farmer-friendly initiatives and improved irrigation facilities, food production in Telangana has increased manifold. The paddy production in Telangana has increased by 342% from 45.71 lakh metric tonnes in 2015-16 to 2.02 crore metric tonnes in 2021-22 and the gross irrigated area has seen a rise of 117% in Telangana since 2014.
