The Congress government has stalled the ‘Nethannaku Cheyuta’ scheme, a groundbreaking initiative introduced during the BRS rule. The scheme is aimed to provide economic independence to handloom workers in Telangana.
It offered essential financial support by matching every Rs. 1000 deposited by a weaver with an additional Rs. 2000 from the government. This intervention brought relief to financially struggling weavers, uplifting their lives and livelihoods.
However, following the change in government, the scheme was put on hold under the current Congress administration, leading to mounting financial troubles for weavers. With the scheme stalled, many are now unable to sustain themselves, and reports of weaver suicides have drastically increased across the state.
Handloom union leaders, who have been advocating for the scheme’s revival, report that despite multiple appeals to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, their concerns remain unresolved. Under this program, over the past 36 months, weavers have dutifully deposited Rs. 1000 monthly, with the expectation of government support.
