
The state government junior colleges account for 50 per cent of the total colleges that are doing well in terms of quality of education and pass percentage. Of the total number of junior colleges of 3,216 in Telangana state, the government colleges are 1,602 while private colleges are 1,571 in number.
Since 2014, the state government did not give permission to the new colleges and about 1,000 private colleges were closed down. The government was renewing the permissions to those already functioning in the private sector. As many as 68 private colleges that were functioning without any permission were closed down by the intermediate board. In the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, there were over 2,600 private colleges which have come down to 1,571 now after the formation of Telangana state. More than 1,000 new colleges in the government sector were set up during the past nine years.
