Telangana state is soon going to have another first to its name. After efficiently implementing best practices in garbage collection, waste management and waste-to-energy generation, the state is now gearing up to launch a new program named ‘Swachh Badi’. This initiative is aimed at making the children future-ready by sensitizing them on waste segregation, compost generation, recycling and reducing plastic usage.
Impressed with ‘Swachh Badi’, a first-of-its-kind solid waste management learning center set up in Siddipet in Telangana, Minister KTR has decided to replicate the same across the state. “We will now set up similar Swachh Badis in all 141 municipalities with Rs. 71 crores. The intent is to train our next generation in better handling of solid waste management,” KTR said.
‘Swachh Badi’ is going to be a one-stop learning center for all solid waste management-related activities and provides knowledge on growing organic food. These centers will encourage people to practice home composting and to create awareness on waste management on a sustainable basis. Various methods such as art installations made out of dry waste to demonstrate the use of up-cycling and reuse concepts, trashonomics school program to teach children about the importance of waste management, and live demos on how to compost at the household, community and in- situ level will be adopted at these Badis.
The experience of standing next to a live composting unit, and seeing and smelling the waste compost is an essential part of the activity, various home and community composting methods are presented through the live demo to the visitors. Through these centers, training will be provided to the elected representatives, officials and citizens to scale up the best practices in achieving Zero Waste Management.
