A recent public opinion survey conducted by the Youth for Anti-Corruption (YAC) has revealed widespread dissatisfaction with the Congress government’s one-year rule in Telangana.
The survey, which gathered responses from 1,43,456 participants across various demographics, highlights a sharp rise in corruption, with many citizens expressing frustration over bribe demands in government offices and unresponsive leaders.
The YAC report, based on opinions collected both online and offline from individuals aged 19 to 60, provides a comprehensive analysis of corruption at various levels of governance.
Key Findings
- Perception of Corruption:
- 76% of respondents believe corruption is rampant.
- 47.9% stated that without paying a bribe, work in government offices does not get done.
- 63.7% reported paying bribes in cash, while 34.2% offered goods or services.
- Accountability and Behavior:
- 63% said there are no honest officials in their area.
- 64.4% noted that officials show minimal courtesy, and 16.4% described them as rude.
- Role of Brokers and Leaders:
- 54.8% reported paying bribes through brokers, while 30.8% paid directly.
- 65% blamed employees and leaders for the rise in corruption.
- 47.9% believe corruption is exacerbated by the broker system.
- Government Performance:
- 41.8% rated the Congress government’s performance as ‘not good’, with 23.3% calling it ‘worse’.
- 36.3% said they struggle to meet the leaders they voted for, and 24% are unaware of their whereabouts.
