With an aim to save every drop of rainwater, the Telangana government has devised a plan to construct 1,200 check dams over the rivulets across the state. In the first phase, it had taken up construction of 638 check dams of which works of 90% dams are completed. In the second phase, the state government has allocated Rs. 1,850 crore to construct another 562 check dams. The irrigation officials have completed the proposals and are waiting to call for tenders.
The check dams that were already commissioned helped improve the groundwater level around the areas bringing much joy to the local farmers. As the water is stored in the check dam, it is also providing livelihood to the local fishermen who are growing fish. The check dams also helped prevent the accumulation of silt in major irrigation projects. As the check dams are offering multiple benefits, the people around them are happy. They were submitting proposals for more check dams in their respective areas.
