Gas cylinder at ₹500: Beneficiaries need to pay total amount upfront to avail subsidy

The beneficiaries who intend to avail the benefits under the subsidised LPG cylinder scheme, need to pay the total amount first. Civil Supplies officials have reported that beneficiaries will initially need to pay the entire gas cylinder bill upfront to the gas companies.

Presently, the price of a gas cylinder in Hyderabad stands at Rs. 955. Following this payment, it is anticipated that the government will provide a subsidy of Rs. 500 per cylinder to the gas companies, after which the subsidy amount will be deposited directly into the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

Currently, the central government offers a subsidy of Rs. 40 per gas cylinder, so the state government is planning to contribute Rs. 415 per cylinder as subsidy under this scheme.

Gas cylinder prices may slightly vary across different locations. Across the state, there are 90 lakh ration cards and 1.24 crore gas connections. In the scheme’s implementation process, civil supply officials have gathered data on beneficiaries with white ration cards, identifying 65 lakh individuals as officially eligible.

However, only 40 lakh people have been identified as eligible beneficiaries at present, with ambiguity surrounding the criteria used for this selection process. The government has yet to clarify how the eligibility was determined.
