Telangana has been recognized as the ‘Best Inland Fish State’ in India by the union government. This recognition is largely attributed to the visionary policies of former Chief Minister KCR during the BRS rule.
KCR’s efforts to strengthen the rural economy and support caste-based professions have yielded long-term benefits, driving the state to new heights in fish production and the empowerment of the fishing community. The BRS government launched the free fish seed distribution scheme in 2016. Over eight years, this scheme catalyzed a ‘blue revolution’, dramatically increasing fish production and enhancing the livelihoods of fisherfolk.
Key highlights of the initiative include the annual distribution of 120 crore fish and shrimp fry at a cost of Rs. 100 crore, totaling an investment of Rs. 600 crore during the BRS regime. As a result, fish production surged from 1.93 lakh tonnes in 2016-17 to 4.39 lakh tonnes in 2023-24, registering a remarkable 69% growth rate. Additionally, fisheries contributed over Rs. 36,000 crore to the state economy.
Before Telangana formation, the state faced a shortage of fish production. However, KCR’s proactive policies not only addressed this shortfall but also positioned Telangana as a leader in inland fisheries.
However, the one-year-old Congress government has reportedly undermined the progress made in the fisheries sector. The free fish seed distribution scheme, which was implemented without interruptions during the BRS tenure, has faced major setbacks under the Congress regime.
A drastic reduction in fish seed distribution has been observed during the Revanth Reddy-led government, dropping from 80 crore fish seeds per season under BRS to 40 crore fish seeds under Congress. Additionally, delays and mismanagement in the scheme have led to protests by fisherfolk.
