Snubbed by BJP-led Centre, Telangana builds largest private rail coach factory

After being snubbed by the BJP-led central government over Kajipet Rail Coach Factory, Telangana has built one of the largest private rail coach factories. Despite repeated requests, the Modi government denied Telangana its constitutional right of setting up the Kajipet Rail Coach Factory but broke ground for a locomotive factory in Gujarat.

According to the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Act, the central government should establish a rail coach factory in Telangana. However, in utter disregard for the bifurcation act, the BJP government clarified that there were no plans to establish the Rail Coach Factory in Telangana. Subsequently, the government of Telangana moved ahead and allotted 100 acres of land for the joint Venture of Medha Servo Drives & Stadler Rail for manufacturing rail and metro coaches.

The Medha Rail Coach Factory is a state-of-the-art facility in an area of 33,000 sq mts in Kondakal and the factory will manufacture coaches for the Vande Bharat express trains. Medha will collaborate with the Telangana Academy of Skill and Knowledge (TASK) to generate an employable workforce and this project will create employment opportunities for the youth of Telangana. With an investment of nearly Rs. 1,000 crores, this unit is expected to employ 4,000 people.

Medha Company is the largest propulsion equipment supplier to the Indian Railways and also the only Indian company with in-house R&D facilities.
