Replug: What BRS govt did to honour Bharat Ratna PV Narasimha Rao

Today is former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna PV Narasimha Rao’s birth anniversary. Celebrated for his pivotal role in shaping India’s economic reforms and his immense contributions to the nation, PVNR’s legacy continues to resonate worldwide. 

Despite his monumental achievements, PVNR was often known for his quiet demeanor, was largely overlooked by the Congress leadership. However, following the formation of Telangana, PVNR received the recognition he truly deserved under the leadership of the former CM KCR.

The BRS government has made relentless efforts to celebrate and honor the legacy of Telangana’s beloved son, PV Narasimha Rao. At a time when Rao’s history seemed to be fading, KCR revitalized his legacy with the proclamation ‘PV Mana Telangana Teevi (PV is our Telangana’s pride). The BRS government has taken significant steps to ensure Rao’s contributions are remembered and celebrated.

  • The BRS has persistently demanded to confer Bharat Ratna on PVNR. The BRS government has passed a resolution in Assembly and wrote a letter to Centre
  • On September 4, 2015, the Telangana government formally recommended PVNR for the Bharat Ratna.
  • On June 18, 2020, the PV Centenary Commemoration Committee also recommended Rao for the Bharat Ratna.
  • On September 8, 2020, the Telangana Assembly passed a resolution to confer India’s highest civilian award on PVNR.
  • In 2020, the BRS government organized year-long centenary celebrations to honor PVNR’s legacy, ensuring his contributions were celebrated across the state.
  • KCR demonstrated his admiration for PVNR by renaming the Veterinary University in the state after PV Narasimha Rao.
  • On November 20, 2020, KCR wrote to then-President Ramnath Kovind, requesting a commemorative stamp in PVNR’s name.
  • On June 28, 2020, KCR wrote to Prime Minister Modi, suggesting the renaming of Hyderabad Central University after PVNR.
  • On June 28, 2021, Necklace Road in Hyderabad was renamed PV Marg in honor of Rao.
  • A statue of Rao was inaugurated on PV Marg on the same day.
  • In a gesture of respect and recognition, PV Narasimha Rao’s daughter, Vanidevi, was given the opportunity to serve as an MLC, representing the BRS.
