In just over a decade since its formation, Telangana has emerged as a beacon of progress and development, setting benchmarks for other states across India. Under the leadership of former CM KCR, the state has achieved remarkable strides in economic growth, infrastructure, and social welfare.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently highlighted Telangana’s achievements in its Handbook of Statistics on Indian States-2024. The report underscores the state’s progress across multiple sectors.
Telangana’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has seen an impressive growth of 249%, rising from Rs. 4.3 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs. 15.01 lakh crore in 2023-24. The state, which accounts for just 2.9% of India’s population, now contributes 5% to the national GDP.
Per capita income, another vital economic indicator, surged by 243%, from Rs. 1,03,889 in 2014-15 to Rs. 3,56,564 in 2023-24, making Telangana the top state in per capita income.
The installed power capacity more than doubled under KCR’s tenure, increasing by 106% from 9,470 MW in 2014-15 to 19,519 MW in 2023-24. Telangana also became the first state to provide 24/7 uninterrupted electricity to all sectors within six months of its formation.
Also,the length of roads expanded by 52.42%, from 92,215 kilometers in 2014-15 to 1,40,555 kilometers in 2023-24.
Irrigation reforms, driven by the Kaleshwaram project and Mission Kakatiya, have revolutionized agriculture in Telangana. The area under irrigation doubled from 78.18 lakh acres in 2014-15 to 1.60 crore acres in 2023-24. Grain production surged by 119%, turning Telangana into a granary for the nation.
The cultivated area expanded by 47.74%, from 1.55 crore acres in 2013-14 to 2.29 crore acres in 2022-23, underscoring the state’s commitment to agricultural growth.
Telangana’s Haritha Haram initiative has significantly increased forest cover. Forest area grew by an astounding 266%, from 80,400 hectares in 2014-15 to 2,94,800 hectares in 2022-23, contributing to environmental sustainability and combating climate change.
The state has made notable strides in healthcare, with government expenditure on medical services increasing by 175.5%, from Rs. 2,650 crore in 2014-15 to Rs. 7,303 crore in 2019-20. Neonatal mortality decreased by 66.6%, reflecting improved healthcare facilities and initiatives like the KCR Kit scheme.
Telangana’s focus on industrial and IT sectors has resulted in a significant reduction in unemployment rates. In urban areas, unemployment dropped by 28.76%, while rural areas witnessed an 85.7% decline between 2017-18 and 2023-24.
Telangana’s achievements, recognized by numerous national awards and accolades, have positioned it as a model state in India. From economic growth to social welfare, the state’s decade-long journey under KCR’s leadership demonstrates the power of visionary governance and effective implementation.
The RBI’s latest report serves as a testament to the success of the Telangana Model implemented by the BRS government under KCR’s leadership.
