HC upholds Telangana’s decision on MBBS seats; locals to get 520 more seats

Except for the 15 per cent of seats under all India quota, the rest 85 per cent of seats in all medical colleges are meant for students of Telangana in the state. In the medical colleges set up after the formation of Telangana state, the Andhra Pradesh will have no quota and all 85 per cent of seats belong to local candidates. Every year an additional 1,820 MBBS seats will be at the disposal of the local candidates.

Health Minister Harish Rao clarified that only in 20 medical colleges existing as of June 2, 2014, the students of Andhra Pradesh will have a local quota. In the 34 colleges set up after the formation of Telangana, only the students of Telangana will have a local category. The students of Andhra Pradesh will have to compete for the 15 per cent seats under the India quota like students of all other states.

Mr Harish Rao said the High Court has ordered that 100 per cent of seats are reserved for students of Telangana state in competitive authority quota and it is a welcome development. With this, the students will get an additional 520 seats. Earlier, CM KCR government reserved 85% seats for locals in B Category seats which resulted in availability of 1,300 medical seats for our students. These two decisions added 1,820 seats for Telangana students which is almost equal to establishing 20 new medical colleges.
