The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has resumed its demolition activities, targeting various locations within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) for the past four days. On Wednesday, HYDRAA’s operations extended to the Nagaram Municipality.
Previously focused on clearing encroachments near ponds, HYDRAA has now shifted its attention to government properties. However, a controversial aspect of the process is that while some residents receive notice of impending demolitions, others reportedly do not. For example, the Mahila Mandali Bhavan in Filmnagar received two notices before being demolished for allegedly encroaching on a road.
A resident of Nagaram claimed that no notices were issued before the demolition at his property, contrasting with previous procedures where official departments issued advance warnings. Under a recent ordinance, HYDRAA now issues notices directly and swiftly carries out demolitions.
In Rajsukhnagar, HYDRAA split into two teams to expedite the process, arriving with heavy machinery like JCBs, which alarmed local residents. While officials insist they are only targeting encroachments, many locals fear further demolitions may extend beyond these.
HYDRAA commissioner stated that the ordinance now grants them authority to issue notices to alleged encroachers, and these notices will continue as necessary. So far, over twenty individuals have been notified, with demolition commencing after a brief review by HYDRAA’s legal team. In some instances, demolitions are reportedly carried out based on local complaints even without prior notice.
Over the last two months, HYDRAA has received numerous complaints regarding road and government land encroachments. Field investigations are underway, and HYDRAA has demolished four locations this week, with plans to send JCBs to an additional ten sites in the coming days.
