Cotton procurement: Telangana farmers abandoned by Congress government

Cotton farmers are facing significant setbacks this season due to the apathy of the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) and the Congress government. The CCI is citing high moisture content to reject farmers’ produce.

Despite 20 days since the cotton procurement season began, not a single bale has been purchased across 24 districts, and only nominal amounts have been bought in six districts. Farmers complain that CCI is holding rigidly to its standards, accepting only cotton with moisture levels within the 8-12% range.

CCI’s stance, reportedly insensitive to current weather conditions, has left many farmers in a bind. Meanwhile, the state marketing department had announced plans to establish 322 buying centers, yet only 280 centers have been opened so far, and purchases are minimal.

By October 24, a total of 124 farmers across six districts managed to sell just 209 tonnes, valued at Rs. 15 crore. This averages to only about 1.68 tonnes per farmer, far from meeting their financial needs. Notably, no payments have been disbursed to farmers yet.

Farmers are expressing deep frustration with CCI’s refusal to buy moisture-laden cotton, a direct result of persistent rains. Many, fearful of further rain damage, are selling to private traders at lower prices to avoid more losses.

The Revanth government and the marketing department face growing criticism for not stepping in to address the concerns of cotton farmers who feel abandoned amidst strict procurement policies and unfavorable weather.
