With Corning Inc. breaking ground for a Gorilla Glass manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, the proposed investment in Telangana has officially been moved. It is reported that Corning International – Optiemus Infracom broke ground for its Rs. 1,000 crore Gorilla Glass manufacturing facility in Chennai.
Initially, the plant was supposed to be established in Telangana but due to the laxity of the Congress government, the investment moved to Tamil Nadu. In September 2023, the then Industries Minister KT Rama Rao met with Corning representatives and convinced them to invest in Telangana to establish India’s first Gorilla Glass manufacturing facility. Attracted by the BRS government’s business-friendly policies, Corning announced a Rs. 934 crore investment in Telangana.
However, just a few days after the Congress party took over Telangana in December 2023, the company decided to shift to Tamil Nadu. The Revanth Reddy government’s hasty moves and regressive politics are resulting in the loss of significant investments and damaging the brand of Hyderabad and Telangana.
It should be noted that Corning is a world leader in material sciences and supplies Gorilla Glass to mobile phone companies, including Apple.
