Maharashtra Okays Penganga Barrage

Irrigation minister T Harish Rao has asked the officials concerned to get ready for calling tenders for building the Channakha-Khorata barrage on Penganga river to start the work in January next.

The minister’s office received a letter from Maharashtra water resources department secretary Satish Gavai on Friday conveying Maharashtra’s consent for the inter-state Channakha-Khorata barrage.

Gavai sent the copy of the minutes of a meeting held between Maharashtra and Telangana state irrigation ministers and officials on November 24 in Mumbai. The Maharashtra secretary sent the minutes of the copy giving consent for construction of the barrage.

The TS government has already accorded administrative sanction for the barrage for Rs 368.60 crore last month. Harish Rao, who is in Madhya Pradesh on a study tour, expressed his extreme happiness over this development and thanked the government of Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and water resources minister Girish Mahajan for their cooperation.
