Telangana government has revived the shelved proposal of constructing a part-elevated road corridor passing through the Army area in Secunderabad to ease the traffic congestion on Rajiv Rahadari. In addition, the government is also proposing to construct another part-elevated road corridor linking Balanagar with Outer Ring Road on Narsapur – Medak highway.
Finality to these two projects came after the government earmarked Rs 6 crore for engaging consultants to take up feasibility studies and preparation of the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) on these two stretches. The 20-km long structure in Secunderabad would link Paradise Junction to Outer Ring Road near Shamirpet. This would be 50 per cent elevated and the remaining 50 per cent would be improvements at the ground level i.e, widening of the existing road. The Balanagar corridor would be 30 per cent elevated and 70 per cent would be improvement at the ground level, according to a GO issued sanctioning money for the projects.
The government constituted a high-level committee consisting of two Engineers-in-Chief of R&B and the Chief Engineer or R&B in-charge of National Highways to finalise the consultancy services to take up the feasibility report and preparation of DPRs.
While the Balanagar corridor may not pose any problem for the State government, the Secunderabad corridor could prove to be a difficult one, as it passes through the military area and any widening of the road or elevated structures should be cleared by the defence ministry. The Congress government led by late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had proposed to construct an elevated road on the same stretch but there was not much headway on the proposal due to various reasons.
