Telangana offers to play host to WTA Open again

By: V.V. Subrahmanyam

The Telangana State government has offered to host the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Open once again in the city if there is a written proposal coming from the WTA Tour. This was made clear by Kalvakuntla Kavitha, MP, at the media conference, graced by tennis legend Martina Navratilova, Telangana Brand Ambassador Sania Mirza and young talent Karman Kaur on Wednesday.

“From the government’s side, we are ready to host the event, provided we are given a detailed proposal,” was Ms. Kavitha’s reply to a general response from the WTA Championships Director Melissa Pine. “We have been open to many WTA events across the world. They involve a lot of logistics and huge expenditure,” was her reply. And Ms. Kavitha’s response was quick, evoking big smiles on the faces of Sania and Navratilova.

“The Telangana government is ready to promote sports. We always felt that Sania, being the Brand Ambassador of our newly-formed State, is already a big factor in promoting sports. And her Wimbledon triumph should inspire many more to take up sports. It is time we get away from cricket fever and give equal importance to other sports,” Ms. Kavitha remarked.

“We are aware that Sania won her maiden WTA title here more than 12 years ago. If given the chance, we will host it in a big way,” she said.
