Telangana Govt to Revive Tank Chains

Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao on Monday said his department would make efforts to restore the chains of tanks which used to irrigate 12 lakh acres in Telangana before merger with Andhra in 1956.

He said there used to be more than 36,000 tanks, but they have been neglected by successive Andhra rulers so much so that they had disappeared over a period of time.

Reviewing the status of minor irrigation resources in the state, at Jalasaudha here, Harish Rao said he would convene a meeting of the officials of GHMC, HMDA, irrigation department, and collectors of Hyderabad and Rangareddy to take steps for restoration of tanks that had disappeared.
