Durgam Cheruvu gets a second life

With the efforts of Government of Telangana, Hyderabad is yet again earning its name as the ‘city of lakes.’ Durgam Cheruvu is one of the latest lakes to undergo beautification works, getting its second life. MA&UD Minister Sri KT Rama Rao inaugurated new facilities at Durgam Cheruvu in Hyderabad on August 28, 2018.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation, HMWSSB and Raheja Group jointly worked on the rejuvenation and beautification of the lake.

The new facilities and infra at Durgam Cheruvu include jogging and cycling track, children’s play area, yoga corner, gym area, children’s multi-play stations, portable library, modular toilet facilities, stone sculptures, and artificial waterfalls.

Exotic and unique trees like Italian Cypress (Pencil pines), Braided ficus, Olive tree, Spiral Ficus, and Ficus multi-stem multi roots are planted at various locations for display. Classical natural stone sculptures have been installed in the courtyard area depicting modern art, with flamingos and palapitta birds being added.

There are 185 lakes under Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits. The government under Urban Mission Kakatiya project is restoring the lakes within Outer Ring Road in four phases at a cost of Rs. 541 Crores. The state government is on a mission to rejuvenate and restore the lakes across Telangana. “Our commitment to the beautification and protection of our water bodies is complete and full,” said Minister KT Rama Rao, at the inaugural ceremony of new facilities at Durgam Cheruvu.

Along with Minister KT Rama Rao, Neel Raheja, Group President, K Raheja Corp, Chevella MP Vishweshwar Reddy, Serilingampally MLA Gandhi Arekapudi, Deputy Mayor Baba Fasiuddin, Principal Secretary, MA&UD Arvind Kumar, Commissioner GHMC Dana Kishore and HMDA Commissioner Janardhan Reddy participated in the inaugural ceremony.
