Are politicians super-human?

By: Soonya

I recently read that the Speaker of AP allegedly misbehaved with the crew of Air India on the Vijayawada flight.

I would have been shocked or surprised otherwise, but being wizened with the way some of our AP politicians behave I am not surprised.

I live in Jubilee Hills and one evening when I came home a little early I heard police sirens blaring. I wondered, if there was some burglary or an emergency around and curious, walked out to see.

To my dismay I saw a police escort vehicle (a brand new Innova that the Telangana State police in Hyderabad acquired recently) flashing lights and blaring the siren.

I just wondered whether there was a need for sirens to be used in residential locality that too in the evening!

I also learnt that the honorable Speaker of AP assembly employs the siren in the morning too when he is leaving his home.

I understand that he lives in Prashashan nagar, where IAS and IPS officers live.

The moot question – is there a traffic jam or significant traffic for the escort vehicle to use the siren in a residential locality where one gets an easy passage without any obstruction?

I think it is the feeling of entitlement and a feeling that politicians are above every one allows some politicians to behave the way they do.

I do hope it is a lesson to our politicians from Telangana, especially TRS.

I had written about the needlessness of pomp and show from politicians. After all they are elected representatives of us nothing more and nothing less.

Here I must mention and commend the simplicity of KTR and his unwillingness to use escort vehicles and pomp.

When do our politicians figure that they are mere representatives of people and servants of people at that?

When do our politicians stop behaving like ‘Gods’ or ‘Kings’ and allow professionals to do their job?

Hope the Telangana ministers and public representatives set a different trend in the nascent state of Telangana and show the way to rest of the country.

On a psychological note, it looks like those who suffer from smallness need to show that they are big. And those who have no substance and feel insignificant need the external paraphernalia to demonstrate their significance!
